We received a call last
night from a lady named Lisa that had a dilemma. She raises AKC German Short Hair
Pups and their mom had been hit by a car the day before and the pups were going hypoglycemic
and she had lost 4 of the pups out of the litter and the remaining 4 were in
distress. They were 18 days old and not taking to replacement formula. She asked
if any of the dams we had might still have milk. I told her we had 1 female
"Emmy" who had just been pulled from her pups that were weaned two
days before. Lisa asked if we would be interested in seeing if "Emmy"
would be a wet nurse. About an hour later Lisa showed up with four pups. Being a
hard core Lab lover, I do have to admit that the pups were pretty cute .... for
German Short Hairs!
We put the pups temporarily in our
whelping box that Emmy and her pups were using. We
built a small box for the four pups later that night. We
were hoping that we would be able to help. After a few minutes "Emmy"
came to the box curious about the "noise" that she was hearing. She was
a little hesitant at first but soon took to the pups, and started feeding the
extremely hungry pups.
It was slow going for a while but she
took to the pups quite well and is now acting like a normal mother. She cleans
them, checks on them when they cry, and is in general doing everything their
"natural mother" would have done. We will assign them colored collars
tonight so that we can watch their weight and ensure that they are gaining the
weight that they need. We will add individual pictures of the pups tomorrow. If
you are interested in purchasing one of these pups. You can call us and we will
give you contact information for the owner of this litter of Labs
..... er, German Short Hairs!!!!
